Humpback Whale, August 28, 2010Monday, August 30

It's said variety is the spice of life and from our sightings today that is a true statement. We started of the day with a pod of harbor porpoises, and then saw a shy minke whale and a big harbor seal. As we left those animals, we headed out to the ledge and we had 2 humpback whales!!

As we were gazing at these 2 enormous animals I noticed the very   distinctive  head of not one, but two right whales, a critically endangered species! We also had a big moon jelly come by the boat, bluefin tuna, 5-7 minke whales and blows from fin whales all around. What made the day even more amazing was the fact we were all alone,  - not a boat in sight - it was just us and the open ocean and an abundance of marine life. It does not get better than that!!

Fin whaleSunday, August 29

Sunny skies and calm seas today! Lots of leaping dolphins, a fin whale, two minkes and a North Atlantic right whale today!  Join us soon - weather is forecasted to be hot this week!

Saturday, August 28

Had a great pod of over 100 dolphins, a fin whale and a sei whale today - gorgeous weather, too!

Friday, August 27

Gorgeous day today, with spectacular sightings!  Started out with a pod of about 70-80 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, then saw 5 sei whales - great looks right near the boat! Got a quick glimpse of a humpback whale, and capped the day off with a  look at a North Atlantic right whale!

Thursday, August 26

Saw fin whales and minkes today!

Mon, August 23-Wed, August 25

At the dock due to high winds and seas.

Sunday, August 22

Saw 50+ Atlantic white-sided dolphins in a feeding frenzy, along with several seabird species, including Wilson's storm petrels, greater shearwaters, gulls and terns!

At the dock until at least Tuesday due to the heavy winds and seas expected over the next day or so.

Saturday, August 21

Great day today, with sightings up near Boon Island.

Had looks at a fin whale, a minke and a great pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins!

Sperm whale flukeWednesday, August 18

Such an awesome day!! Had a trio of fin whales that surfaced just off the bow of the boat and glided near us... and then topped it off with a sperm whale - this is the first day that one of these has been sighted in our area for 15 years!!!

Tuesday, August 17

Two pods of dolphins, plus a rare North Atlantic right whale today!

Monday, August 16

High winds and rough seas kept us at the dock today. See you tomorrow!

Sunday, August 15

A bumpy ride today, but we ended up with great looks at a fin whale, with 2 more nearby!

Saturday, August 14

FIVE fin whales today! Plus 2 blue sharks! And a gorgeous sunny day on the water. Join us this weekend - whales are fairly close and there are plenty of them!  Lots of seabirds around, too - today we saw gannets, Wilson's storm petrels, greater shearwaters and terns.

Friday, August 13

Had some dolphins and a fin whale today, only 19 miles from the harbor!

Thursday, August 12

Had a breaching right whale today! What a sight! Along with a couple fin whales.

Wednesday, August 11

Fin whale

What a gorgeous day on the water! Clear blue skies, calm seas - couldn't ask for anything better. And we got to see several whales only 22 miles from the harbor!   There were several fin whales in the area, and we got good looks at one or two of them (still trying to figure that out, need to take a better look at my images).

One of the fin whales cruised uncharacteristically slowly next to the boat, affording us great views of its white lower jaw and beautiful swirly chevron pattern. It always amazes me how an animal this giant can be so graceful!

Then we moved on for a quick sighting of another animal in the area - a North Atlantic right whale! For some reason, these animals have been hanging out in our area lately.  It's always amazing to get a look at an animal that some say may go extinct within our lifetimes.

The relative closeness of the whales make me optimistic about upcoming trips - having whales closer always allows us more time with them, which is of course what we're hoping for!  Thanks to all who joined us and we hope to see you again soon!

Tuesday, August 10

Great sightings today - with terrific looks at fin whales!

Monday, August 9

Atlantic white-sided dolphinWe did not have to travel as far today as we have in days past, which made us all feel hopeful the whales will move back into closer range. Right by the Isles of Shoals we had our first whale of the day - a nice minke whale. Then we came across some curious Atlantic white-sided dolphins, who came very close to the boat! We saw a couple fin whales at a distance, and then saw another fin whale on our way home!

Sunday, August 8

Got to see another North Atlantic right whale today!

Saturday, August 7

Today was a beautiful day on the water. We had the great fortune to see 3 North Atlantic right whales!

Right whales can grow to about 60 feet in length, and weigh up to 80 tons - they are huge animals!  They were named because they were considered the "right" whale to hunt, and were hunted so much that they were declared endangered by 1935.  Today, it's estimated that there are only about 425 of these animals left.

Thanks, as always, to  all who joined us today - we had great passengers on board with lots of good questions!  Today we had folks celebrating birthdays and anniversaries - it's always very cool when we (and the whales) can be part of these happy moments!  Best of luck to you, frequent passengers Marty and Joyce Briner, in your future endeavors - hope to see you again sometime!

Friday, August 6

Humpback whaleAs has been happening a lot lately, we had a long ride today.  But we were rewarded with terrific looks at "Mars," a female humpback first sighted in 1979. The water was a beautiful blue and the breezes were nice and cool. It'd be great if the whales came a little closer, but I'm glad there's some around!  We've had some nice seabird sightings, too - northern gannets fairly close to shore, and shearwaters and Wilson's storm petrels out near the whales.

Humpback WhaleThursday, August 5

Crazy weather today, but great whales! Terrific looks at a humpback whale who hung out and fluked often near the boat. Also a couple fin whales in the area.

Passengers were left with an experience I hope they will never forget - I know I won't!
